Who and what is ARC?

Animal Rescue Center of Bay County, Inc. is a nonprofit, all volunteer, foster based organization dedicated to helping our local animals that have been abandoned in the Panama City, Florida area.  Many of these animals are abandoned due to no fault of their own, and deserve a second chance at life. That is what ARC is trying to give them.

Where does ARC provide services?

ARC is a local animal rescue, focusing our efforts on the local shelters that euthanize animals. All of our animals stay in private foster homes until they are adopted, so we do not have a facility or central location.

When was ARC created?

ARC was on the road to creation around the beginning of July 2006. We are currently in the process of assembling our board of directors and application for our official nonprofit status.

Why was ARC created?

Again and again, while raising money locally to support a national dog rescue, we were asked about the dogs in our own community. Who would rescue them? ARC was born.

The goal of ARC is “To save those, that others have abandoned”. But more specifically, to fill a service that we believe is needed.
There are only a few rescue organizations in this area, with some of them being national rescues. While national rescues are great (both founders of ARC volunteer for one), they do not have the ability to focus intensely on one specific city or county as ARC intends to. This will allow those that contribute or volunteer to have a sense of local pride that they are making their community better.

How does ARC intend on solving the animal abandonment crisis?

While this is a lofty goal, and perhaps one that will never be completely solved, ARC believes real and measurable results can be achieved. These results can be realized by the implementation of a multiple phase approach.

The first part of our plan consists of letting shelters and well established animal rescues know of animals in our local kill shelter in danger of being euthanized.  We contact local, state and national rescues about these animals and do us much as we can to help them.

The second part is utilizing our volunteer base to provide the following services: foster care, home checks, reference checks, training consultation, vet care, adopter/pet lifestyle matching, and education to help eliminate the abandonment issue at its root. These services allow us to insure that each pet’s second chance will be in a home that is truly the best environment for the pet.

The third part will be the expansion of our rescue efforts to other areas where kill shelters are euthanizing animals at a high rate. In those areas, we will develop our system of rescue management from the first phase as we did in Bay County.
